Thistle Control in Pastures

I have been getting a lot of calls

on thistle control this year. Lots of the

hormone type herbicides control thistle

when treated early. One new product

has caught my attention recently. Dow

is currently selling one of their products

under a new name at a reduced cost in

the LA, TX, OK and NM markets. The

product is branded as GrazonNext. It is

the same formulation as Forefront.

GrazonNext is a mixture of aminopyralid

(Milestone) and 2,4-D. I have

seen good to excellent control of thistle

at Jones-Idlewild at 1.5 pt/A. This puts

GrazonNext in the $9-$10 per acre

range. Please note GrazonNext is not

the same herbicide as Grazon P+D.

GrazonNext will not provide the control

of woody vegetation that Grazon

P+D provides. Always apply with at

least ¼% NIS (non ionic surfactant) or

crop oil concentrate.

Jimmie is a rancher in Texas

with alot of cattle and alot of acres he has extensive experience maintaining ranchland for grazing. He manages his land by mulching growth and spraying afterwards. He hires a company to come in with a Terra Gator configured for spraying liquids. Here is a picture of a Terra Gator

The Terra gator sprays "GrazonNext" to kill the mesquite and other undesireable growth leaving clear pastures.

Update: 7/7/10

I contacted Jimmie to check his results after 45 days in this hot sun with these heavy rains we have had. He said that his results with the clearing and spraying were outstanding! He had two plants come back on the entire parcel of land! Thanks for the info Jimmie
